Welcome to the Boland Region of SANParks Honorary Rangers

United by passion and driven by purpose, we turn our love for South Africa’s natural heritage into conservation in action.

Our members come from all walks of life, bringing together diverse professional skills, practical experience and enthusiasm. Together, we make a meaningful contribution to conservation while enjoying the camaraderie of like-minded people.

Although SANParks Honorary Rangers may volunteer in any South African National Park, Tankwa Karoo National Park proudly remains the Boland Region’s primary duty park and the place many of our members call their conservation home.

Making a Difference
Every year, SANParks provides a wish list of projects requiring volunteer support. Together with park management, we identify where our skills and energy can make the greatest impact.

Our work is as varied as the landscapes we serve and includes building environmental infrastructure (such as eco-loos and improving campsites); maintaining trails and park facilities; inspecting, repairing and marking fences to protect wildlife; removing obsolete infrastructure; supporting rangers and seasonal flower patrols; and creating educational and interpretive material about Tankwa’s geology, biodiversity, birdlife and cultural heritage.

Members also contribute to citizen science by recording environmental and wildlife observations during a long-term survey of Tankwa’s boundary fence. Others are developing a photographic guide to the park’s plants and flowers.

No two years are ever the same, and every project offers an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.

Environmental Education

One of the Boland Region’s proudest achievements is the Environmental Education Centre at Platfontein in Tankwa Karoo National Park.

What began as a vision has become a thriving facility where children from surrounding communities experience nature firsthand, learn about conservation and develop a lifelong appreciation for South Africa’s remarkable biodiversity. Our volunteers maintain and improve the centre and its lapa, ensuring it remains a valuable educational resource for generations to come.

Beyond Tankwa

Conservation extends beyond park boundaries – and so does the Boland spirit.

Throughout the year, we raise funds to support conservation projects, participate in outdoor expos and community events, to introduce people to the work of SANParks Honorary Rangers. Our annual Birding Weekend and hosted 4×4 expeditions in Tankwa Karoo National Park combine memorable experiences with practical support for conservation. Boland members also help host the popular Loffiesdraai Bush Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and contribute to emerging initiatives in Meerkat National Park.

Our reach extends to national projects, too. Boland members support K9 Project Watchdog through duty at the Table Mountain National Park K9 kennels, fundraising and awareness. Members also contribute to Embrace, which supports SANParks staff through training, leadership development and team building. When floods affected the Western Cape in 2026, members assisted with clean-up work in Bontebok National Park.
