Regional meetings:
We meet on the third Wednesday of every month, at 18:15, at the Helderberg Nature Reserve in Somerset West.
Boland Region
Boland region is involved / responsible for the following projects in Tankwa Karoo National Park:
Currently, our main fundraising events include a Birding Weekend, to be held this year on 27-29 September in the Tankwa Karoo National Park, and hosting the Loffiesdraai Bush camp three times a year in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. We predominantly perform duties in the arid national parks, with the Tankwa Karoo National Park being our main duty park.
Apart from Ranger and (seasonal) Flower duties, and based on the Park’s wish list items, duties in the Tankwa Karoo National Park include the following
Fence marking: To prevent animals from getting stuck in the fence, the boundary fence is being marked with metal plates.
Removal of internal fences: The Park recently acquired two new farms, and the Honorary Rangers are helping to remove the internal fencing.
Environmental Education: For the past three years, the Honorary Rangers have hosted camps for Grades 5-7 children from three primary schools in the surrounding communities, Elandsvlei, Matjiesrivier and Middelpos. It is envisaged that the outbuildings at Platfontein will be converted to an Environmental Education Centre, with facilities for children to sleep in dormitory style accommodation, rather than camping. A section of this upgrade, namely the building of a lapa to accommodate large groups of people, is complete.
Adding value to the Park by putting together information booklets about interesting features, like the fascinating geology, historic buildings and the bird life of this arid area.
Currently we have 53 members, which includes Springbok and Gordonia sections.
