Handover of infrared thermal imaging equipment to SANParks The unlawful use of gill nets, specifically at night, is an extremely destructive method of fishing that has severe negative impacts on the ecology and sustainability of fish stocks in the Swartvlei Estuary, Garden Route National Park. The estuary serves as an important resource for local communities. Poachers typically move at night and hide in the vegetation after nets have been set. The SHR, Wilderness Region, with contributions from the West Rand Region, were able to donate thermal imaging night vision equipment to the Garden Route National Park. The infrared technology will support foot, boat and vehicle patrols to identify poachers and will significantly improve the effectiveness of ranger patrols and law enforcement operations. “The SHRs are very much part of our operations and efforts to ensure long-term sustainability and ecological integrity of the Touw and Swartvlei Estuaries,’’ said Jonathan Britton, Senior Section Ranger in the Garden Route National Park. 106 SANParks Honorary Rangers 2024 Members’ activities continued SUPPORTING THE GARDEN ROUTE NATIONAL PARK
