Integrated Report 2024

Hiking path up Lion’s Head The second significant project was to attend to the hiking path up Lion’s Head, one of the best-loved and most heavily used of all trails in Table Mountain National Park. On parts of the upper reaches of the route, chains and ladders are needed to allow access to the summit. These chains and ladders had for some time needed repairs and upgrades, not only for the safety of hikers but also to protect the immediate surroundings from further erosion. The upgrade needed to be carried out by specialist contractors. It is difficult work, requiring the installation of new sets of staples, chains and ladders on an almost vertical mountainside, and this could not have been done without a substantial amount of money. Fortunately, the Scheinberg funds which were donated to the Table Mountain Region mainly for the purpose of upgrading mountain paths, could be used for this project. The new ladders work magnificently. At a couple of the trickiest junctions there are two-way systems which make the up-journey and the down-journey easier and safer for everyone.
