Project of the Year Award The project of the year award is awarded to the initiative that made a significant contribution towards the following objectives: • Community involvement • Member involvement and commitment • Interpretive value • Fundraising potential Table Mountain marine support group The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and Robben Island Marine Protected Area (MPA) are important for protecting the vast ecological diversity beneath the coastal ocean while also sustaining recreational use and tourism along the Cape coastline. Managing these resources comes with significant challenges. Rangers of the TMNP Marine Unit can face difficult, stressful and dangerous working conditions, often on a daily basis. Over the last year, members of Table Mountain Region provided increasing levels of support to the Marine Unit. Members were actively involved in activities as diverse as checking permits and bag and size limits at known poaching hotspots, participating in beach clean-ups with community groups, and assisting with essential building maintenance at the Marine Unit Office. They have also assisted SANParks conservation students with surveys to assess the abundance and size of alikreukel (giant periwinkle, Littorina littorea) and facilitated a five-day swim training course for Marine Unit Rangers and Environmental Monitors.
