Given that the SHR is 60 years old this year, and that the five-year period of reengineering the organisation is concluded, the strategy focus was on the future of the SHR organisation. A strategy session was held with more than 150 SHRs on 24 February 2024. The strategy session was facilitated by a pro bono supplier, Letsema Consulting, who also consolidated the outcomes of the session. Members gave input into various strategic questions posed, and their input was consolidated to create an overarching strategic view. The outcome of the session can be summarised as “Transform for Impact – seeking to build a diverse, sustainable institution through enhanced capacity and strategic partnerships”. The strategy comprises five strategic objectives: • increase institutional management capacity, • strengthen fundraising and marketing, • foster human capital development, • cultivate strategic partnerships, and • optimise operational efficiency. Each objective identifies key initiatives with underlying tasks and desired outcomes. As a result of this strong directional outcome suggesting that the organisation needs to better capacitate itself, further strategic investigations were undertaken. This included a senior level engagement between the SHR Board (covered under Material Matters: SANParks Relationship) and SANParks executives, a cost study comparing the cost to funding ratios of similar non-profit organisations, and financial modelling of the impact of hiring a small, professional, remunerated management team. All inputs were ultimately consolidated into a discussion document on the future of the SHR. The discussion document proposes the actions that the SHR can take to protect and grow its organisation in a rapidly changing world. It addresses the challenges and opportunities that the SHR faces in relation to its major stakeholder, SANParks, and its compliance, governance, funding, and transformation issues.
