SANParks’ Vision 2040 is well timed. “Vision 2040” is SANParks’ exciting new pathway to the future of conservation in South Africa. In brief, it is a shift from conservation areas that are islands and that exclude people to expansive, connected stretches of land aiming for a future where both nature and people thrive. Visit SANParks website for more information on “Vision 2040” – www.sanparks.org. We look forward to collaborating with SANParks in aligning the SHR with “Vision 2040” over its 15 year timeline. Initial workshops with SANParks are planned to start early in 2025. Socio-economic development (SED) is one of SANParks’ focus areas and a key component of “Vision 2040”. Our recently established SED National Project is gaining traction, and several regions have increased the number of completed and future SED-related projects. At the same time, implementation of our new five-year strategy has commenced with a roadshow to all regions to communicate the Board’s vision of the future of the SHR. Our strategy comprises five strategic objectives: (1) increase institutional management capacity, (2) strengthen fundraising and marketing, (3) foster human capital development, (4) cultivate strategic partnerships, and (5) optimise operational efficiency. Refer to page 40 for more information. We are optimistic about the future. It is both exciting and challenging and promises more activities for our members and increased funds raised and donated to SANParks. The intent and purpose of this panel is to elicit comment and contributions addressing matters facing the SHR from time-to-time, including: • SHR Constitutional matters • Commercial agreements with sponsors, donors, members and stakeholders • General legislation, and the review of developments in general law, and the impact on the SHR (e.g. POPIA and PAIA) • Serving on a disciplinary panel (i.e. in the capacity as chairperson of a disciplinary hearing and/or being the initiator in such a hearing) SANParks Honorary Rangers 2024 49 FUTURE OUTLOOK
