Integrated Report 2024

Various displays were hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal, Bushveld, Marakele and Boland Regions at, among others, the Thabazimbi Show, the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the Career Expo at the Frans du Toit High School in Phalaborwa and the kykNET Buite Ekspo. Twelve regions hosted educational displays at 14 Pick n Pay Hypermarkets throughout the country as part of the Powerade Marakele Marathon promotion. Interpretation This project focuses on the restoration and maintenance of sites of historical or cultural importance in our national parks. Interpretation is an explanation of the natural, cultural or historic significance of each site. It provides insight into its conservation importance and the need for protection. West Coast Region has been updating interpretative story boards in the West Coast National Park. Members of the East Rand Region have completed the re-thatching of Campbell Hut in the Skukuza Rest Camp. They are currently conducting research for new displays and are planning structural repairs to the Pretoriuskop Interpretation Hut. New signage for the StevensonHamilton Museum, Campbell Hut and Pet Cemetery in the Skukuza Rest Camp has been finalised. Members of the Highveld Region perform ongoing maintenance to the Mount Tshikumbu Interpretation Site. An information board has been erected at the Pretoriuskop ox-wagon. It is envisaged that commemorative signage and information boards will be erected at several historical sites in 2024/2025. In the Table Mountain National Park, a new exhibition exploring the ‘Origins of Early Southern Sapiens Behaviour’ was opened by SANParks at the Cape of Good Hope Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre in June 2023. This exhibition showcases the discovery of early modern human origins and innovations in southern Africa using multi-media displays and was curated by award winning documentary filmmaker, Craig Foster, and archaeologist, Petro Keene. Members of the Table Mountain Region have developed a Site Interpretation Course for the exhibition. This will allow trained members of the SHR to offer site interpretation services that will enhance visitor experience.
