Integrated Report 2024

Purpose The vision of the Junior Honorary Rangers National Project is to provide a conservation ethos for the South African youth, as they are our successors, and to expose them to the strategic objectives of the SANParks Honorary Rangers to build a world class ecovolunteer organisation. Juniors of the Lowveld Region were privileged to meet Dr Jane Goodall at Chimp Eden. Members of the Junior Honorary Rangers (JHR) are typically high school learners (13 to 18 years) who have an interest in nature conservation. The activities and courses are interactive, with monthly meetings and/or local outings. The curriculum is offered in five phases, each lasting a year and completed at the learner’s own pace. The aim of this youth development programme is to: • Guide and lead our youth in conservation principles. • Instil a love and knowledge of nature and conservation. • Encourage JHR to remain involved in conservation into adulthood. • To learn and understand more about the national parks in South Africa and their unique ecosystems. • To develop a special love and passion for the national parks and other conservation areas. • Provide support to SANParks. • To influence the people around us and grow their interest in nature and conservation. The goal is to create exposure to conservation efforts, both locally and in national parks. Theoretical learning and practical participation encourage a passion and respect for nature as leadership skills are developed. Alumni from several regions have embarked on a career in conservation, by formally enrolling for tertiary education courses in the natural sciences, veterinary science, and field guiding. Our Juniors are truly on their way to being our successors! Structure The programme is offered by members of the SHR who have successfully completed the JHR facilitators’ course in participating regions. Facilitators are screened as per the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 and are required to submit a 88 SANParks Honorary Rangers 2024 JUNIOR HONORARY RANGERS NATIONAL PROJECT Members’ activities continued
