Guests on a guided walk during their Sand River Bush Camp experience. Fully catered meals are provided by the SHR hosts and qualified field guides accompany guests on morning and evening drives or walks in wilderness areas away from tourist roads. This is a popular product, and many of the 13 participating regions accept bookings well in advance. A great deal of behind-the-scenes work goes into the camps. Members of the SHR are responsible for providing a high standard of catered meals, cleaning the camp every day and conducting regular maintenance. During the 2023/2024 financial year, 75 camps were hosted for more than 600 guests. A total of 411 members spent approximately 20 621 hours working at the Sand River Bush Camp (hosting and maintenance) and a net income of approximately R1.4m was generated, this being channelled through the regions to SANParks wish list items. The annual maintenance camp was held in January 2024. During this camp, the roof and ceiling of the dining area was replaced. Damaged beams were replaced, and Sisalation was installed to keep the area cool. The carport roof was upgraded, and a new septic tank was installed. A wide range of electrical, plumbing, bush-clearing, cleaning, carpentry and general repair-work was also conducted. Sand River Bush Camp The fenced Sand River Bush Camp offers comfortable safari tents overlooking the Sand River in the southern Kruger National Park. It gives groups of eight guests the opportunity to spend three nights in a private camp in relative comfort, with basic amenities available.
