Sports events managed by SHR: The SHR manages the Powerade Marakele Marathon, Marakele Mountain Bike (MTB) Challenge, Mokala MTB Classic and Golden Gate Challenge. The 14th Powerade Marakele Marathon, held in the Marakele National Park, was a great success. Some 1 600 runners participated in four events; 42,2 km, 21,1 km, 10 km and a 5 km fun run, Sections of the 42,2 km and 21,1 km routes take runners through the Big 5 area of the national park. Discussions are underway with Powerade to renew their generous sponsorship agreement, which expires in a year’s time. The inaugural Marakele MTB Challenge attracted 261 cyclists, many more than expected. There are also four events; 70 km, 40 km, 20 km and a fun ride. Like the marathon, sections of the 70 km and 40 km routes take riders through the Big 5 area. We do not currently have a sponsor for this event. The Mokala MTB Classic, which takes place in the Mokala National Park, is a more relaxed, personal, and friendly experience, being limited to 150 participants. There are three events; 80 km, 40 km and a more technical 35 km ride. Participation in the event declined during the Covid-19 pandemic, but we are confident that we can get back to 150 riders in the next year or two. The Golden Gate Challenge trail run has been held in the Golden Gate National Park for many years. It was previously managed by Wildlands WILDSERIES assisted by SHR. However, following discussions with Wildlands Trust, these roles have been reversed and SHR will manage the MTB routes going forward. Planning is underway for the 2025 Challenge which will include new MTB events in addition to the trail running routes. A family wellness component is also planned. Mokala MTB Classic.
