Powerade Marakele Marathon. Sports events management Over the past year, the need for a more integrated management approach to sporting events was identified. Sports events have therefore been added to the Chief Sustainability Officer’s portfolio with the objective of creating a sports events management team. The goals of the sports events management team include to: • Meet regularly with regional sports events managers and coordinators. • Provide assistance, expertise, and project management to regions organising sports events. Several events take more than a year to plan. Advance marketing is key. • Consolidate SHR profit/loss reports for all sports events in national parks, or which are held in conjunction with SANParks (report requested by SANParks). • Implement standard reporting for SHR sports events to facilitate the above report. • Develop standards for regional golf days. • Implement internal and external communications about our sports events starting with a national calendar. • Centralise branding material for sports events and make this available to all regions, on a rental basis. • Use professional sports events managers to enhance SHR sports events and share experience and knowledge with regions. • Implement standard operating procedures for sports events, including regional golf days. Contact David Webster dwebster@sanparksvolunteers.org Outsourced sports events: The Tour de Addo, a three-day MTB tour in the Addo Elephant National Park, and Sylvester MTB Challenge and Trail Run, which is held in and around Karoo National Park, are both events managed by third parties on behalf of SHR. Charity bonds: SHR ran charity bonds for the Cape Town Cycle Tour and 947 Ride Joburg. Both were successful and will be continued. MTB activities in KNP: Ride for Rangers and Bushveld Region’s MTB activities are popular guided day and overnight rides which take place in and around the Phalaborwa Gate. Other sports events: The SHR assists with the West Coast Marathon, Skukuza Half Marathon, Prescient Freedom Paddle, Cape Point Challenge, and Trans Augrabies MTB Stage Race.
