Kruger National Park (KNP) flood disaster assistance
The rain has abated and the water subsided in all the rivers, at least for a while, as the medium-to-long term weather forecasts predict more rain. This has given Park Management time to make a preliminary assessment of the damage and potential costs to replace, repair and rehabilitate. Initial estimates amount to half a billion Rand.
SANParks Honorary Rangers have again been asked to wait for a call-to-action by the KNP Disaster Management team as they continue to be approached with offers of help by many members of the public.
The KNP Disaster Management team have requested that we suspend collecting and delivering food as they have met the immediate needs of those who were stranded and other requirements in the near term. Committed non-perishables (such as tinned foods) can be warehoused.
All park staff who have received assistance have been overwhelmed at the generosity shown by donors and have been unanimous in expressing their appreciation for those who have made it possible.
The SANParks Honorary Rangers fundraising efforts have been extremely successful, and initial extracts from the various financial channels indicate that we have raised just under R1,2m at this stage (subject to proper reconciliation). The value of food donations has not yet been calculated but many corporates around the country, especially the major retailers, have generously donated supplies.
There continue to be many offers of assistance from the public and members of the SANParks Honorary Rangers.
