SANParks Honorary Ranger West Rand – Equipment handover
Equipment worth R275 000 donated to the Garden Route National Park
On Friday 22nd March 2019, West Rand Region of the SANParks Honorary Rangers (SHR) had the privilege of handing over equipment to the value of approximately R275 000 to the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) at the SANParks regional office in Knysna.
The region has chosen to raise funds for conservation initiatives with a specific focus on counter-poaching. Snowy Botha of the Conservation Services National Project of the SHR assisted with identifying and funding priority items. Items donated included scientific equipment and equipment for field rangers, such as tents and sleeping bags, hand-held and vehicle mounted torches, binoculars and night vision binoculars and back-packs.
Important scientific equipment was also donated, including a camera trap for recording animal movements and a microscope camera which will enable scientists to photograph specimens under a microscope and then share these images with the scientific community for research purposes. This equipment is likely to contribute significantly to our understanding of ecological processes, which will, in turn, inform conservation action.
West Rand Region would like to thank SANParks staff and, in particular, Paddy Gordon, Park Manager at the Garden Route National Park, for their hospitality, as well as members of the public and business community who donated so generously to the cause.
