Since 2015, the Conservation Services National Project of the SANParks Honorary Rangers has received an annual donation of R250 000 every year from the Amdec Group. This brings the total raised for anti-poaching to R1,25 million over the past 5 years, a feat made possible by the close relationship between the Chairman of Amdec Group, John Wilson, and SHR member, Janssen Davies.
The Golden Gate Challenge is a 3-day track and trail run across the rugged and beautiful mountains of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The trail meanders along hiking trails and jeep tracks through remote and scenic parts of the park, including Little Serengeti with its teeming herds of Blesbok, Zebra, Black Wildebeest and Eland.
Visitors to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park can look forward to an exciting new attraction – the Glen Reenen Interpretation Centre opened its doors to the public on 4 October 2019.
A collaborative venture between SANParks and the SANParks Honorary Rangers, this informative and interactive display showcases the diversity, scenic beauty and uniqueness of the park and takes one on a journey through its natural history, palaeontology, geology and cultural heritage.
Grant Melville, a member of the SANParks Honorary Rangers KZN Region, will attempt a non-stop hike from Zinkwazi main beach to Umhlanga Rocks, covering the 70 km in 24 hours on 21-22 September.
Starting at Zinkwazi main beach on 21 September at 5 am, he will trek across Blythesdale, Tinley Manor and Sheffield beaches, before stopping for lunch at the Salt Rock Hotel and then proceeding along Chaka’s Rock, Ballito and Zimbali beaches to Westbrook, La Mercy and Umdhloti, finally arriving in Umhlanga Rocks on 22 September at about 9 am.
Historically vultures ranged throughout much of South Africa. Today, populations have dwindled by up to 80% in some areas, including the central Karoo. This is particularly evident for the Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) which was formally widespread across the Karoo but is currently listed as Endangered both regionally and globally.

The SANParks Honorary Rangers’ Project Embrace was recently awarded the second runner-up award in the category “Rhino Conservation Supporter Award” at the Rhino Conservation Awards.
The award was presented at a Gala Dinner held on 21 July 2019 at Montecasino in Johannesburg.
Over the past few months a group of SHR Lowveld Region have been busy upgrading the Rhino Trail. This trail runs approx. 3,2Km inside Berg en Dal camp along the perimeter fence. This is the first of its kind with the first 800m accessible to the visually impaired with 26 Braille boards. These boards give a description of the Big 5, Small 5, Smallest 5, The Big 6 Birds, The big 5 Trees as well as some interesting facts on Fauna and Flora. In the near future braille tree tags will also be added.
The Conservation Services National Project of the SANParks Honorary Rangers recently held it’s annual long weekend of classical music performed by an ensemble of musicians at the Mopani Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park.
